The biggest mistake Admins, Developers, and Architects make is pitching Org cleanup as a technical health exercise. (I've made it too.)
Stop talking about how "clean" the org will be. Focus on one metric: story-point delivery capacity.
1. The Reality of Your 100-Story-Point Sprint
Management assumes your team's 100 story points/sprint all go to new features. In a messy org, it's really:
- 60 story points: actual feature delivery
- 40 story points: capacity drain
Nobody files a ticket for "spent 4 hours figuring out which of 17 duplicate fields to use." But those story points are gone every sprint. The business already pays for the mess, in permanently lowered story-point output.
2. Shift from "Maintenance" to "Capacity Recovery"
Consolidating validation rules or simplifying Flows isn't a chore request, it's recovering stolen story points.
- Rejected: "We need 100 story points to clean up tech debt."
- Approved: "We want to invest 100 story points today to permanently unlock 15 more story points every sprint going forward."
3. The Math Executives Understand
"Our true capacity is capped at 60 story points due to architectural friction. This cleanup permanently raises it to 75, without hiring anyone."
Bottom Line
Leadership will want more story points delivered next quarter with the same team. You get there not by pushing people harder, but by unlocking story-point capacity that's already trapped.
